Forming refers to the process of creating temporary structures, known as forms or moulds, that define the shape and size of the concrete structure being built. These forms are typically made of wood, metal, or plastic, and they are carefully assembled and secured in place before the concrete is poured. The purpose of forming is to contain the concrete during the pouring and curing process, ensuring that it maintains the desired shape and dimensions.

 

Forming is crucial for various concrete structures, including walls, columns, beams, foundations, and slabs. It requires careful planning and precise execution to ensure that the forms are properly aligned, levelled, and secured. The forms also serve as a guide for placing reinforcement materials, such as rebar or wire mesh, within the concrete for added strength and stability.

 

Once the concrete has been poured into the forms and allowed to dry and harden, the forms are removed, revealing the finished shape of the concrete structure. Properly formed concrete structures have smooth, straight edges, and well-defined corners.

Flatwork, on the other hand, specifically refers to the construction of horizontal concrete surfaces, such as driveways, sidewalks, patios, and floors. The process of flatwork involves preparing the ground, setting up forms, pouring the concrete, and then finishing the surface to achieve the desired texture and appearance.

 

During flatwork construction, the ground is typically excavated and compacted to ensure a stable base.
